How can I apply?

In order to be eligible for the scholarship, students must write a 1,000-word article on photography, birdwatching, hunting, traveling, or feeding wildlife! Articles should provide information on your topic of choice! Here are a few suggestions to help you get started (you can use these if you're stuck and need a topic):

  • How photography can help conserve and preserve nature
  • Why feeding birds in the winter is just as important as feeding them during the summer
  • The impact of hogs on farmlands and why hog hunting is an ethical solution

If you're unsure about your topic, you can email us at Once you're ready to submit your article, email us at If you would like to reach out to us with your article through our form, you can contact us here.

As for the writing style, it's recommended to write your article in a simple manner as if you're speaking directly to your audience. External research is strongly recommended. Think of it as a short and easy to read essay that you have surely written in your academic career, but easier to understand, read, and write (so no need to use fancy words). Don't think too much about it and don't forget to have fun! Your article will not only educate the readers about a new topic, but you will also get to learn about something completely new to you. And who knows, you may end up exploring a new hobby!

Deadline: August 31, 2020

The winner of the Ballachy Scholarship Program will be announced here and they will be contacted before October 15, 2020.

Good luck everyone!
