But not every reader knows what chokes are and how they can be beneficial in hunting. So, let’s first get some knowledge about chokes, and then we’ll reveal our top picks that you can buy right now.

What are Chokes and Why Do You Need Them?

A shotgun choke is a constriction at the muzzle end of a shotgun barrel that affects the dispersion pattern of the fired pellets, which in turn changes the effective range of the shotgun.

Shotgun chokes are either screw-in chokes or fixed, permanent chokes. The use of screw-in chokes is more common among avid hunters and sportsmen, whereas the use of permanent chokes is more common among military and law-enforcement personnel.

A screw-in choke (the type we are discussing today) gives you the liberty to decide how much the pellets will spread over a specific distance. For example, if you want to hit a flock of geese, you need the pellets to spread out as wide as possible so that you can hit more of them. A wide choke can make this possible. However, if you want to take down a deer with the same weapon, you can switch to a narrower choke to make sure that the pellets remain in a dense pattern and inflict a fatal wound to the animal.

A choke tube is a device that is inserted into the barrel of a shotgun to change its effective range and patterning characteristics. Choke tubes are available in many different sizes, with varying degrees of effectiveness. Some models are “ported” which means they have small holes drilled through them to reduce muzzle blast, recoil, and/or improve patterning by venting propellant gases forward rather than rearward. The Carlson’s Choke Tube 12 Gauge Cremator Non-Ported works with Winchester, Mossberg 500, Browning Invector, Weatherby, and Savage 12 gauge shotguns.

What To Consider When Buying Best Choke for Rabbit Hunting?

Here are the factors that need to be taken into account when selecting a choke for your shotgun.

Constriction

Shotgun chokes are classified by constriction (the amount of restriction provided on the shot column as it passes through the choke), and by their “choke designation” (which typically consists of one to three letters).

For example, a choke with the designation of “CYL” has cylindrical restriction and is the most common choke for trap and skeet shooting. A choke with a designation of “IC” (meaning “improved cylinder”) provides only partial cylindrical constriction and is often used by hunters to improve patterns on long-range shots.

Internal Diameter

Shotgun chokes are manufactured with a variety of different inside diameters. In general, the tighter the choke, measured either in terms of its constriction or “choke designation”, the denser the pattern will be at a given distance from the muzzle. Conversely, a looser choke will produce a less dense pattern even at very close range.

  • Cylinder (.000″) – Least Restrictive, used for most shooting situations. Fairly open pattern with little reduction ineffectiveness at ranges beyond 35 yards or so.
  • Improved Cylinder (.005″) – Improved cylinder is a step up from cylinder, but still quite open.
  • Modified (.015″) – Modified is very similar to Improved Cylinder, but it is just a bit tighter and thus provides slightly denser patterns than an Improved Cylinder choke at the muzzle and beyond.
  • Full (.020″) – The most restrictive of all commercially produced shotgun chokes available for typical shotgun barrels. A Full choke is very restrictive, but it will give you an effective range of about 30-35 yards.
  • Extra full (.030″) – Extra full or “triple full” chokes are the tightest commercially produced choke for a typical shotgun. Despite this extreme level of constriction, triple full chokes work out to an effective range of about 25 yards.

Material

Chokes are made from high-strength alloys, stainless steel, or other materials depending on the use to which the choke is likely to be put and the degree of wear it may be expected to encounter.

  • Chokes intended for use with lead shot may be made from phosphor bronze, monel, or iron.
  • Chokes used in competition and where the highest standards of performance and reliability are required may be made in high strength stainless steel alloy.
  • Waterfowl chokes typically have a gold finish to resist corrosion.

Shotgun Compatibility

Chokes are made with screw-in constrictions and with longer parallel section shanks that fit into the muzzle of a shotgun barrel by means of an adapter:

  • Amongst screw-in chokes, ¼ and ⅜ inch (6.35 and 9.52 mm) threads with corresponding bore diameters and constrictions are standardized for use with 12 and 20 gauge shotguns. Shotguns with magnum-length chambers (for example 3½ inch chamber) may require a different choke size to be installed than would otherwise be dictated by the gauge of the gun.
  • Pairs of adapters for each gauge comprise one set, sized specifically to fit common barrel contours.

Ammo

The choke may be adjusted for different types of load, game, or shooting conditions:

For example, Skeet chokes are designed to deliver a relatively even but concentrated pattern at 25 yards (22m), whilst Improved Cylinder and Modified chokes will give about an 80% shot pattern at 40 yards (37m).

Ease of Installation and Removal

Screw-in chokes may be removed and replaced to allow the use of different choke constrictions, or replaced with chokes of a different degree of choke.

Wrenchless installation chokes are the best ones if you need to change them frequently on a hunting trip. If you want to use a single choke for a long time, you can use one that is screwed on with a wrench.

Even if it is a choke that needs a wrench to install and remove, go with the one that can be installed with any wrench and not with just the one that comes with it.

Price

Choke prices range from high-quality “muzzle loading” chokes for muzzle-loading shotguns that retail at around $100 per pair up to high-quality aftermarket chokes (including extended choke tubes) that can cost $400 or more.

FAQs

Yes, you can but not having control over the pattern, spread, and density of the shot will make hunting harder. A choke can let you precisely place the pellets where you want them to go, increasing the chances of hitting the prey.

There is no rated age limit of a choke. It will last as long as it is not mishandled or used with an incompatible type of ammo. If you use ammo the choke is not rated for, you can end up damaging the choke for good.

No, most chokes can be installed on the weapon with the wrench that comes with them and some can even be installed without any tool. All you need to make sure is that you are not crossing the threads when screwing the choke in. Doing this can damage the choke or the weapon.

That will depend on the type of weapon and ammo you are using and the distance at which you are from the target. Generally, improved cylinder chokes are ideal for rabbit hunting.

Yes, you can use a goose choke on rabbits because you need the pellets to spread wider in both cases.
