Best Peep Sights

The peep sight is a type of aperture sight that shooters widely used on rifles before the introduction of the telescopic sight. It consists of a circular opening or “peephole” through which the shooter looks, only a tiny segment of the total target area. They must align the eye with the barrel and the front sight for sighting. The peep sight is usually mounted on the rear of the receiver, often in tandem with a rear sight element (open or aperture) on the breech end of the barrel; this type is known as a buck-eye configuration.

The main benefit of open sights is that it provides an unobstructed view of the target, even allowing multiple targets to be sighted simultaneously. Peep sights can be more accurate than open sights (if the shooter does their job) because they provide a smaller circular image of the target, focus for the user’s eye, and gather light more efficiently than an aperture. Size and Diameter of Sight Aperture

Aperture size is somewhat of personal preference and varies depending on the shooter’s eyesight. The more open the sight (larger aperture), the faster it will be for close-range targets. Mounting Position

The peep sight should always be mounted above the receiver on the barrel if possible because it allows easier access for adjustments and cleaning (less debris). If the peep sight is mounted on the receiver, it will have to be removed before detaching/attaching the barrel.

Quality of Construction

A peep sight should be made of steel or aluminum for maximum durability. The housing should also be sealed completely to keep out dirt, sand, and water to maximize longevity. This is especially important if you use the rifle for hunting purposes where weather conditions are less than favorable.

Skill Level

Peep sights are better suited for experienced shooters capable of responsible gun handling. While they are easier to use than open sights, they are not as intuitive as the red dot sight and require more time, effort, and experience to master. Beginner shooters should practice with open sights before moving on to peeps.

Type of Target

Peep sights are great to use with slow-moving targets that have a discernible “center” or shape. They are less effective for fast-moving objects. For this reason, peep sights are not recommended for rapidly moving small games like rabbits and squirrels.

You can use peep sights on nearly all types of rifles, but they are most widely used on bolt-action and lever-action hunting rifles. Generally speaking, higher-priced peeps offer increased robustness and durability and more exemplary calibration features (i.e., windage/elevation adjustment knobs). Lower priced peep sights are typically made of aluminum alloy and have a rougher finish.

Type of shooting

Peep sights typically work best for target practice and sighting in rifles at stationary targets from mid to long-range. They are not as useful for close-range, fast-moving small games like rabbits and squirrels due to their slow acquisition time and lack of precision for smaller targets.
