When choosing a holster for your firearm, it is important to be informed about the options available to understand what the different features mean and how they will affect you. When selecting a holster, whether, for duty use or concealed carry, you need to find one that fits both your handgun and your personal preferences.  We will break down some of the most common features found on holsters for sig p220.

Retention Level

The retention level refers to how securely the gun is held in the holster. This can be affected by different styles of holsters, such as whether they have flaps over the weapon or active retention devices like a strap or thumb break. The more secure, the better, but not to the extent that you cannot get your gun out quickly when necessary. There are generally three retention levels you can choose from. Level 1 has no devices for added security, level 2 uses a strap or something similar, and level 3 is generally a thumb break holster with some sort of trigger guard device. This is purely preference based on what feels most comfortable to you. You want to find one that works well for your handgun, so it stays secure without giving too much resistance when removing the gun. 

Material

There are three common materials used for holsters: Leather, or split leather. This is the traditional material used for gun holsters and is still often the most popular because of its comfortable feel and stylish look. It is usually molded to fit a specific gun model like sig p220 but can be generic. Hybrid (usually nylon). The inside has some sort of soft fabric finish, while on the outside, there is some type of synthetic material that resists moisture, such as Kydex or Boltaron. These materials are known to be more rugged than standard leather and offer increased durability. Nylon hybrid holsters tend to be less expensive than counterparts made of other materials, so they are very popular with budget-minded gun owners. 

Plastic or Polymer, molded in a variety of colors and styles. They are very popular because they come at a reasonable price and don’t have any break-in periods. The main downside to these holsters is that they won’t absorb moisture, so they will print if you sweat much while wearing them. It is also more prone to scratching the finish on your firearm compared to other materials. In addition, this type of material may have trouble holding onto heavier guns with optics attached due to its flexibility.

Style

There is such a wide variety of styles and manufacturers; it would be near impossible to list all the different types available. There are three main styles: 

Belt Holster

This is the most popular type of holster. It attaches to your belt with loops or hooks and can also connect via a paddle platform if you prefer this method. This allows you to either place the holster at any position on your belt (for appendix inside-the-waistband carry) or behind your hip (3 o’clock), depending on which you find more comfortable and practical for your needs. 

Paddle Holsters 

The outside portion is made of tough plastic instead of metal clips like belt holsters, so it slides right into the pants and is held in place with a pressure fit. It can be easily removed from the pants by pressing down on a paddle to release it from the holster. They are generally more comfortable since they don’t attach to your belt but can move around if not properly positioned. 

IWB or Pocket Holsters

They clip onto your belt or slip into a pocket for added concealment. Inside-the-waistband models have metal clips that slide over your belt, while pocket holsters have a piece of metal lined inside with fabric, so it doesn’t damage the gun’s finish as it slides into your pocket or front/rear waistband. They come in very small sizes that allow you to place your weapon inside your front pants pocket for easy concealment. Some are ambidextrous, allowing you to choose which side you want the holster to be on.
